WHAT IS CORDYCEPS FLOWERS?

Cordyceps flowers, 蟲草花 (Chóng Cǎo Huā) also known as Cordyceps sinensis or caterpillar fungus, are a type of fungus that grows primarily in the mountainous regions of Tibet, China, and other parts of Asia. They are considered a medicinal mushroom with a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine.

Cordyceps flowers have a unique appearance, resembling a flower or caterpillar. They are formed when the spores of the Cordyceps fungus infect the larvae of certain insects, such as caterpillars. The fungus then grows inside the larva, eventually mummifying it and forming the characteristic “flower-like” structure.

In traditional Chinese medicine, Cordyceps flowers are highly valued for their potential health benefits. They are believed to possess adaptogenic properties, meaning they may help the body adapt to various stressors and promote overall well-being. Cordyceps flowers are often used to support respiratory health, boost energy and stamina, enhance immune function, and improve kidney and lung function.

Cordyceps flowers can be consumed in various forms, including dried, powdered, or as an extract in supplements or herbal formulations. They are commonly used in soups, teas, and as an ingredient in traditional Chinese recipes, like the mentioned “Steamed Chicken with Cordyceps Flowers,” to impart their unique flavor and potential health benefits.

RECIPES TIPS

  • Before steaming, marinate the chicken pieces with ginger, soy sauce, oyster sauce, salt, sugar, and cooking wine. This will infuse the chicken with flavor and make it more tender. Allow the chicken to marinate for at least 30 minutes or longer for better flavor absorption.
  • Arrange the marinated chicken pieces in a single layer in the steaming dish. Scatter the julienned ginger, Cordyceps flowers, red dates, and goji berries over the chicken. This ensures even distribution of flavors throughout the dish.
  • Steaming time and temperature: Steam the chicken over high heat for about 20-25 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through and tender. The exact cooking time may vary depending on the size of the chicken pieces. To check for doneness, insert a knife into the thickest part of the chicken; if the juices run clear, it’s cooked. If you choose to use boneless chicken instead of chicken with bones, you can reduce the steaming time to just 20 minutes.
  • Just before serving, drizzle the sesame oil over the steamed chicken to enhance the aroma and flavor. Garnish with chopped scallions for a fresh and vibrant touch.
  • Steamed chicken with Cordyceps Flowers pairs well with steamed rice or noodles. Serve it alongside steamed vegetables or a simple green salad for a well-rounded meal.
  • Taste the sauce before serving and adjust the seasonings according to your preference. Add more salt, soy sauce, or sugar if needed to balance the flavors.

Remember, cooking times may vary based on the size and thickness of the chicken pieces, so adjust accordingly. Enjoy your flavorful and nourishing Steamed Chicken with Cordyceps Flowers!
